Iddenden Trust

The Iddenden Trust (Registered Charity: 242034) is managed by the same trustees as The Springett Almshouses Trust.  The stated aims of the charity are for:

The relief of persons resident in the parish of Hawkhurst who are in need, hardship or distress. If and in so far as the income of the charity cannot be applied towards the object above it may be applied for the general benefit of the inhabitants of the parish of Hawkhurst in such charitable ways as the trustees think fit.

HISTORY

In 1566 Thomas Iddenden (a Gentleman of Hawkhurst) "left land properties valued at £410 to the churchwardens of Hawkhurst and Frittenden to support marriage portions as well as lands of estimated value of £500 for the charitable uses of these communities”. Thomas specified that income generated should be used "to the relief of poor householders and to such deeds of charity as shall be thought most needful".

Today the charity is still active and continues to make modest grants to Hawkhurst residents in need, the village school and community groups.
